We often hear about the school to prison pipeline that fuels cycles of oppression. We know that the conditions of someone's early life can dictate a cycle of crime and incarceration that will follow them forever. But what if I told you that there is another pipeline, one that can diminish the damages of the first one, and one that is up to us UW students to build.

Seattle has a major housing crisis. It has had one for the past decade. The crisis has one cause and one cause only. The violent, extremist hatred of the poor that the Seattle suburbanite nurtures.

Another Student Demonstration Calls to Center the Well-being of Agricultural Workers, Inaction and Recurrent Iniquity Shows the University’s True Colors

There’s something to be said for eating your favorite vegetables, participating in joyful movement, and other practices meant to sustain a happy life. However, what does it mean to promote counting calories, weighing oneself constantly, and watching the numbers plummet? The University of Washington has some practices that do not help sustain such a happy life.

Whether it’s paneer that’s actually undercooked tofu or pancit that’s literally made with dry spaghetti, HFS directors have a track record of bulldozing Asian cultures.

Students United for Palestinian Equality & Return at the University of Washington rejects and condemns the dangerous statement released on October 9th by Ana Mari Cauce. This statement sends the message to all racially oppressed and exploited students and workers in the UW community: that The University of Washington supports Zionist war crimes and is opposed to the Palestinian people’s just demand for an end to over 75 years of ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, and genocide. 

On Monday May 1, 2023, hundreds of people joined together to march through the streets of Seattle, Salem, and other cities in the Pacific Northwest in recognition of International Workers Day, which has been celebrated for over a century to acknowledge the struggles and successes of workers and migrants around the world. The PNW People Over Profit (PNW POP) coalition helped organize and attend these actions.

Venezuela is a country under siege. For a decade now, US sanctions and embargo have constricted trade to the country, as punishment for the successes of the Bolivarian Revolution – and to force regime change upon the people of Venezuela. Assets have been seized, trade has been cut off, and the Western banking system has shunned the nation. Amid this, the country has persevered – and for this crime of defying the US, a Venezuelan diplomat, Alex Saab, was arrested three years ago.

Our newspaper’s very existence signifies that something is wrong with The Daily, the University of Washington’s official student newspaper. However, we have yet to fully dive into our qualms with The Daily. We decided to write this after multiple requests and hope it can stand in for a traditional ‘About’ section on our website, at least for the time being.

I think I speak for all of us when I say these were really helpful suggestions. Also, we were flattered that somebody took the time to send us such a thorough email. We were reading it on the floor with our chins in our hands, kicking our feet and giggling, and then we all skipped off with arms linked to get your email address tattooed over our hearts.

A while ago– and by “a while,” I mean a full two months– I had the privilege of interviewing my colleagues at The Nightly. It’s taken me a long time to write down, mostly because I was nervous to get started, but also because about half the hour-long Zoom call was us going off on tangents that had nothing to do with the questions.

On January 17th, besieged Palestinian journalist Bisan Odwa called for a global strike during the week of the 21st-28th in hopes of advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. It is no secret that the University of Washington has remained complicit in Israel’s occupation of Palestine and the ongoing targeted repression of student activists who attempt to speak out against the genocide.

Resist US-Led War Seattle unequivocally condemns the partnership between Boeing and UW at the Climate Solutions Summit this past Friday, April 28th.

The University of Washington’s Transportation Committee will be voting to approve $300K in anti-homeless architecture. The proposal allocates funding for security changes to the Central Plaza Garage, which includes the installation of new security gates and surveillance systems. Gating off the Central Plaza Garage will harm the students and community members who use it as shelter.
