Founded on January 6th, 2021, we knew from the very beginning that our paper would be a project in a very turbulent time. The rise of fascism and the American right in the 21st century is an indicator of the ever increasing wound that late stage capitalism is leaving on our country. Our founders sought to establish a source of information and community conversation.
We seek to serve as an independent, horizontal, and volunteer project that provides information to our community members that would otherwise be hidden by the capitalist grip on much of our world's media. Now, more than ever, we need sources of information that can report the truth, especially from the voices of our marginalized community members.
Since 2021, we have run our project horizontally and egalatarianly, with every member of The Nightly crew, having an equal say in the operations of our publication. This is one of our criticisms of The Daily, which runs hierarchically. Hierarchical operations under the current capitalist system, especially when corporate money and influence play such a big role in institutional integrity, are problematic when trying to provide the services you may have set out to provide for the good of the people.
A full explanation of our qualms regarding The Daily, can be found here, an article we try to update often to ensure accuracy.
Since 2021, our membership has shifted, but our core values have remained true. Since we have existed for nearly 5 years as of writing this, we have alumni of the University of Washington who have worked for The Nightly. Their hard work and dedication to get this project off the ground would not have been possible without them. We thank our fellow crew members for their dedication to this project.
We are an openly socialist publication. We understand capitalism to be a failing system that does not provide for the masses of our population. As queer people, we seek to elevate the voices that would otherwise be hidden. By creating a publication that openly examines our world through a socialist lens, we can serve the audience that makes up most of our population: students and workers.
As a strictly independent organization, we do not run ads, endorse for-profit entities, or require payment to access our work. That being said, as a volunteer organization with several out of pocket costs we pay, we rely on our fellow community members for their support!
All things considered, we look forward to continuing to work with you.
Love
-The Nightly Crew
The Nightly: Editorial Philosophy
Founded on socialist anarchist principles, The Nightly at the University of Washington instigates in pursuit of truth. We inform about stories otherwise hidden or misconstrued to the public, so you reckon with your own story. Whether it's the rise of fascism and the American right to the new opportunities at the UW food bank to the negligence of the UW administration and local government, or even the victories of socialists across the world, we elevate the stories shrouded in a clouded society. Enter yourself and see the potential, the skill, the fear, and the bravery that is happening all around us. Realize that you are not separate from this world; you are an integral part of it. Decide to act because our lives will happen in the same breath as revolution.
