As a part of our sustained cooperation with our various community collective partners at The Nightly, we are sharing information this week about Subvert U-District’s current wish list, especially as temperatures begin to drop this winter. We hope to provide the information so that our community readers know how to support the community, and can contribute to its wellbeing. Now, more than ever, it is vital to join together as a community to provide for each other, especially when the system is so unreliable to us. Subvert UD has continuously played an active role in mutual aid and collectivism in and around the University of Washington and the U-District.
If you have extra spending money and want to give our University District neighbors a hand (especially those unhoused), Subvert UD has a list of highly requested items you can donate to help. In a conversation with Subvert UD, we learned that tents, sleeping bags, blankets, hats, gloves, and socks are in the highest demand and can be dropped off at Subvert UD distributions, which are open to all and held in the University Heights Center basketball court on Sundays between 11:45 AM and 1:30 PM. Supplies can also be dropped off at other times if coordinated by messaging @subvert_ud on Instagram or Twitter.
For those who don’t have the time to bring supplies in person, Subvert UD has compiled a Walmart wish list linked here, where you can check out online, and your items will be delivered to Subvert UD for distribution. Engaging with Subvert UD’s Instagram and Twitter posts helps, too! In addition, if you have no other way to help, Subvert UD does seek monetary donations here.
We are a community, no matter how difficult the ruling class makes that for us. We echo Subvert UD’s mission that we need a “direct approach to combating the University’s sphere of influence around the broader University District by focusing on mutual aid.” In how Subvert UD is committed to “work[ing] to subvert the anti-Black and anti-houseless principles the University District is built upon through efforts in supply and meal sharing, food sovereignty, and direct action, while carrying forward the ideals of our original Black and Brown femme leaders.”
So, as the holiday season grows nearer, as the nights grow longer, and the weather colder and wetter, please remember your community members who may be less materially fortunate this year. Remember that we are members of our communities, and we must work to ensure that everyone can find some safety in these cold and wet months. Let's ensure that we, as a community, can try to make everyone’s life more comfortable this winter, to whatever extent we can. Thank you, Nightly readers.
